The V&A Acquires Iconic David Rockwell Set Models

This fall, the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London acquired models of four stage sets designed by David Rockwell. Two of these set designs, for Hairspray and Kinky Boots, are currently on display in the newly renovated Theatre and Performance Galleries at the V&A South Kensington. The V&A acquisition is a thrilling milestone and accolade that represents all we hope to achieve in merging architecture and storytelling across public and entertainment spaces. The V&A also acquired set models for The Nap and On the Twentieth Century.

To celebrate the acquisition, David gave a talk at the V&A on October 21, reviewing his 25 years working in set design in a conversation with V&A Senior Curator of Theatre & Performance Simon Sladen. The discussion explored the interaction between performers, audiences, and set design, and the role of design in storytelling. A full recording of the conversation can be found here.

Since 2000, David and our studio have designed sets for more than 100 notable productions on and off Broadway and in London’s West End. David's design for She Loves Me garnered him a Tony Award.
